POWERFUL STILL WE RISE MARCH ON THE RNC -- MORE PHOTOS ON HW SITE

Still We Rise - 06
Monday at noon, the Poor People's March & Rally kicked off at Union Square in NYC -- the event was sponsored by Still We Rise , a non-partisan coalition of over 35 organizations including Housing Works (http://www.housingworks.org), New York City AIDS Housing Network (NYCAHN, http://www.nycahn.org) and Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP, http://www.champnetwork.org). This march, unlike Sunday's rally, focused on local issues of poverty -- New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, New Yorkers who are or have been homeless, New Yorkers struggling with the welfare system and New Yorkers who have experience with repressive drug laws. The march went west to 8th Avenue, then turned north to stop two blocks from Madison Square Garden, the site of the Republican National Convention.

Reports of size varied but the crowd was large and the New York Times reports online that a police officer put it at 20,000 (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/30/politics/campaign/30CND-PROT.html). The march and Housing Works' presence was covered by major media around the
world.

Housing Works CEO Charles King offered a moving prayer to open the rally, and dedicated the event to the memory of Keith Cylar, as well as Joe Capestany and Joe Bostic, co-founders of New York City AIDS Housing Network, and all those who've died in the struggle.
