MR. SMITH GOES...BACK ON HIS WORD?!?

Oregon senator threatens to break his promise to preserve Medicaid

Gordon, don't fail us now!
Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), who just a few weeks ago led the successful fight to keep harmful Medicaid cuts out of the Senate Budget Resolution, is reportedly bowing to political pressure. The senator is said to be negotiating a deal this week to accept $8 to $10 billion in new Medicaid cuts in exchange for the creation of a commission that will study Medicaid for a few months-then likely recommend even deeper cuts to this vital program by September!

DON'T LET GORDON SMITH FORGET HIS COMMITMENT TO PEOPLE WITH AIDS AND OTHER LOW-INCOME FOLKS WHO DEPEND ON MEDICAID--CALL HIM TODAY!

Senator Smith must hear from people living with HIV/AIDS, activists and advocates from his home state of Oregon--and from all over the country. We've got to tell him that any Medicaid cuts will hurt AIDS care in Oregon and nationwide. He must be told that it's unacceptable to balance the budget by dismantling our country's health care safety net. For people with HIV/AIDS, it's a matter of life and death.

Dial 1-800-828-0498 and ask the Capitol Hill Switchboard to connect you with the office of Senator Gordon Smith. Then deliver this message:

"People with AIDS need you to stand strong against Medicaid cuts. Don't accept new cuts, and don't make any deals that will weaken Medicaid and hurt AIDS care. For us, it's a matter of life and death."

This message has been brought to you by the HIV Medicaid/Medicare Working Group, a national coalition of advocates working to protect and expand Medicaid and Medicare for people living with HIV/AIDS. For more information about the working group, please write to kink@housingworks.org.

BUT WAIT!

Today--Tuesday, April 26--there's one more thing you can do to keep Medicaid strong for people living with HIV/AIDS: Call 800.828.0498 or 877.762.8762, ask for one of these New York Republican House members who said they were against Medicaid cuts...

  • Sherwood Boehlert
  • Sue Kelly
  • Peter King
  • Randy Kuhl
  • John McHugh
  • John Sweeney
  • Jim Walsh

...and tell them:

"Medicaid is a life-and-death issue for people with AIDS. We need
you to vote for today's motion to instruct budget conferees to remove Medicaid
cuts from the final budget deal. Thanks for your support."

Then call the other reps!
