THE HOPWA LETTER CLOSES TOMORROW, FRIDAY, APRIL 22!
CALL YOUR SENATORS NOW TO URGE THEM TO SIGN THIS LETTER DEMANDING INCREASED FUNDING FOR HOUSING FOR PEOPLE WITH HIVAIDS!
NEW YORKERS, CALL:
SUSIE SAAVEDRA [202.224.4451] in the office of SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
And
CARMENCITA WHONDER [202.224.6542] in the office of SENATOR CHARLES SCHUMER
AND ASK THEM TO HAVE THEIR BOSSES SIGN THE DURBIN-MARTINEZ LETTER ASKING FOR INCREASED FUNDING FOR THE HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH AIDS (HOPWA) PROGRAM. PLEASE DO IT NOW!
BEYOND NEW YORK:
If your senators aren't on this list...
1. Akaka (D-HI)
2. Cantwell (D-WA)
3. Corzine (D-NJ)
4. Dayton (D-MN)
5. Durbin* (D-IL)
6. Inouye (D-HI)
7. Kennedy (D-MA)
8. Kerry (D-MA)
9. Lautenberg (D-NJ)
10. Levin (D-MI)
11. Martinez* (R-FL)
12. Mikulski (D-MD)
13. Nelson (D-FL)
14. Obama (D-IL)
15. Salazar (D-CO)
16. Reed (D-RI)
...please contact their offices immediately and request that they sign the letter. Then pass on this message to networks in your state--and to anyone else you know with an interest in this vital HIV/AIDS Housing program.
The opinions of constituents carry weight with members of Congress, so tell them you expect them to support HOPWA! The letter asks for $385 million in funding. The administration's proposed budget funds HOPWA at $268 million, which just isn't enough for safe housing for people with HIV/AIDS.
Simply:
- Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask for your senator's office.
- Once connected, ask to speak to the staffer that handles housing.
- Tell the staffer that you want the senator to sign the letter sponsored by Senators Durbin and Martinez to HUD appropriators asking for increased funding of the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program.
- Repeat with your other senator!
