As Update readers know, the New York City AIDS community has taken on the State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (OTDA) for compelling the city HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) to raise their clients' rent contributions in violation of a federal 30% of income cap.

And we won in court!

With a court order temporarily staving off homelessness, poor people living with AIDS and their housing providers and advocates are seeking a long-term fix: legislation to expand the 30% rent contribution cap to all poor people living with HIV/AIDS in the state of New York.

Advocates are meeting with legislative leaders, including Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer and Congressman Jerry Nadler, to call for hearings and a legislative solution. The community continues to work closely with champions, including the Hon. Deborah Glick (chair of the Social Services committee in the Assembly), Hon. Dick Gottfried (chair of the Assembly Health committee), and Hon. Tom Duane (housing champion, PLWHA and dealmaker in the State Senate).
