NY groups needed to send a message to Spitzer

As Update readers know, AIDS and antipoverty advocates have been working to restore public assistance benefits for low-income families that receive the AIDS emergency shelter allowance and include a disabled child receiving federal SSI benefits.

A Pataki-era policy eliminated "SSI invisibility" for these families, taking away an average of $573 per month from about 1,100 families statewide.

Housing Works and others have sought a policy change from the Spitzer administration to restore the benefits - but we haven’t yet won the legislative language that could accomplish the change.

We've got a chance to make it happen before the end of this month, and we're hoping you'll add your name and organization to a letter to Governor Spitzer (with a cc to legislative leaders) we hope to send on April 27.

If you can sign on by 5pm, Thursday, April 26, we'd appreciate your support – just send a note to kink@housingworks.org with your name and organization to sign on.

Details and a copy of the sign-on letter are attached – we’re proud to have the support of a score of rock-star advocacy groups from GMHC, BLCA, LCOA and NYAC to the Legal Aid Society, the Center for Disability Rights, CIDNY and the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island.

Thanks for your consideration – sign on today!
